The Social Security Administration confirmed a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment for 2027, increasing the estimated average retirement benefit by $75 per month.

The Social Security Administration confirmed a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2027 on October 14, raising the estimated average monthly retirement benefit by $75, from $2,095 to $2,170. The increase will affect approximately 76 million Americans receiving Social Security or Supplemental Security Income (SSI), according to the agency’s official announcement. The adjustment is higher than the 2.8% COLA implemented for 2026, an increase of 0.8 percentage points.

It covers retirement, survivor and disability benefits, along with SSI payments. Nearly 72 million Social Security beneficiaries will receive the adjustment beginning with their January 2027 payments. Approximately 7.3 million SSI recipients will receive increased payments starting December 31, 2026. Some individuals receive benefits from both programs, meaning the two populations overlap.

How Benefits Will Change

The agency’s 2027 fact sheet estimates that the average retired worker’s monthly benefit will increase from $2,095 to $2,170, equivalent to approximately $900 more over 12 months. For retired couples who both receive benefits, the estimated combined monthly payment rises from $3,238 to $3,355, an increase of $117.

Average benefits for disabled workers are projected to increase from $1,642 to $1,701 monthly, while the federal SSI maximum for an eligible individual will rise from $994 to $1,029. These figures represent average benefits or federal payment standards, not guaranteed individual increases. Actual payments depend on each recipient’s benefit calculation, applicable deductions and program eligibility.

Inflation Determines Annual Increase

Social Security calculates its annual adjustment using the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), comparing the third-quarter average with the corresponding average from the previous applicable year. The official calculation shows the CPI-W average increasing from 317.265 in the third quarter of 2025 to 328.746 in the third quarter of 2026. That change produces a 3.6% COLA after rounding to one decimal place.

The final determination replaces earlier forecasts that depended on incomplete inflation data. Investozora previously examined the COLA estimates and explained the COLA formula used to determine annual benefit adjustments. Although the increase is designed to help benefits keep pace with inflation, it does not guarantee that every recipient’s purchasing power will improve by the same amount.

Medicare May Affect Payments

The announced 3.6% adjustment applies to Social Security benefit calculations, but beneficiaries with Medicare premiums deducted from their payments may see a smaller increase in their actual deposits. The agency said 2027 Medicare premium information will become available through official Medicare channels. The effect on individual payments will therefore depend partly on the applicable premiums and deductions.

Investozora has previously examined how Medicare premiums can affect the amount beneficiaries retain after a COLA. The increase also does not mean that every American qualifies for a new federal payment. It applies to people eligible for benefits under the relevant Social Security or SSI programs.

When Notices Will Arrive

SSA expects personalized COLA notices to become available through eligible beneficiaries’ online accounts beginning in late November 2026. People who want online access to their notices must establish a Social Security account and enroll in paperless notices by November 18. Those who have not chosen paperless delivery will receive mailed notices in December.

The personalized notices will identify updated benefit amounts and applicable deductions. Recipients do not need to submit a separate COLA application to receive the automatic adjustment. They can review their updated benefit information through official SSA channels when the notices become available.

The next significant development will be the release of personalized benefit notices and 2027 Medicare premium information, which will help beneficiaries determine how much of the increase they will actually receive.
