A final round of scheduled September Social Security payments is set for Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2026, for beneficiaries in the fourth-Wednesday payment group.
The Social Security Administration’s official 2026 payment calendar places Sept. 23 on the fourth-Wednesday cycle. Under SSA rules, that generally means people whose payment date is based on a birth date from the 21st through the 31st of a month.
For beneficiaries receiving benefits on another person’s earnings record, however, the relevant birthday may not be their own. SSA says the payment day is determined by the birthday of the person whose earnings record the benefit is based on. For example, someone receiving benefits based on a spouse’s work record generally follows the spouse’s birth date.
Who Gets Paid
The Sept. 23 payment generally applies to Social Security beneficiaries assigned to the Wednesday payment system whose applicable birth date falls between the 21st and 31st. SSA’s regular Wednesday schedule is:
- 1st through 10th: second Wednesday
- 11th through 20th: third Wednesday
- 21st through 31st: fourth Wednesday
Sept. 23 is the fourth Wednesday of September 2026. SSA’s official 2026 Social Security payment calendar confirms the date. Readers who want every September date can also use Investozora’s September 2026 Social Security payment schedule.
Who Is Excluded
A birthday between the 21st and 31st does not automatically mean someone receives a payment Sept. 23. SSA says people who were receiving or had applied for Social Security on or before April 30, 1997 generally receive Social Security on the third of the month.
People receiving both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income also generally receive their Social Security payment on the third and SSI on the first.
SSA identifies additional exceptions to the Wednesday cycle, including certain beneficiaries living abroad and some people whose Medicare premiums are paid by a state. That means Sept. 23 is not an extra payment or bonus. It is the regular monthly payment date for the fourth-Wednesday group.
When Funds Arrive
SSA says federal benefit payments are generally made electronically, and direct-deposit funds are intended to be available when business opens on the normal payment day. The scheduled date does not guarantee that every banking app will display the deposit at exactly the same time.
Beneficiaries who are unsure about their date can check SSA’s official benefit payment schedule. SSA’s published calendar says that if a payment does not arrive on the expected date, beneficiaries should allow three additional mailing days before contacting Social Security.
